The dimensions of the infill site, five metres wide and twenty-five metres deep, together with the building regulations and an existing arched gate were the factors that gave this building its striking shape: “Form follows law!” Its transparent orthogonal part meets all legal requirements. The other part exceeds the maximum volume laid down in the area development plan – a structure “which shouldn't be there at all”. The organic and introverted structure swings upwards past the gate and its orthogonal twin to reach the upper floors. The differences between wall, roof and ceiling are blurred. In their new combination, they produce interior spaces of a high quality with good natural lighting.
