WATERLOOHAIN MEDIAPOOL W5, 2002
PROF. CARSTEN ROTH ARCHITEKT, HAMBURG

With the conversion and addition of a new storey to a three-storey former commercial building from the fifties with a reinforced concrete frame and a yellow brick façade, the Medienpool Waterloohain W5 in Hamburg was established as a new place of business. A central aspect of the design concept was to develop an individual, almost alienating architectural language within the new building, one characterised by significance and transferability on an abstract architectural level. Through playing down the additional storey's attachment to the building, the architects sought to avoid it appearing solid in order to achieve a high degree of architectural abstraction.
